August 23, 2011

Today is my mom's birthday!  I miss living close to home- even more so now that we have kids... It would sure be nice to be close to her again.  I can't wait for her to come visit in just 8 more days :)  Yeah!!

The kids are doing well.  They just got back from the park with Mommy K.  They were supposed to go to one park/hiking area that they love and ride their bikes, but when they arrived our daughter hurried to get out of the car without permission and hit the car parked next door.  She didn't seem to think it was a big deal.  Our kids love their stuff, but they only love it for a short time. You can really see that they aren't used to having anything really nice for their own.  Moving around so much they must have lost so many clothes, toys, and other things that at this point, they get excited about something new and after 2 or 3 days, they don't really care anymore.  This is ok for us because we aren't big on material possessions and would much rather them cherish relationships over belongings, but we don't want them to never attach to any of their toys/belongings.  I really think it will take a while before they realize that they will get to keep all of these things forever (or at least until they are on to the next stage, lol).  They really are so adjusting so well so little set backs like this really don't cause great alarm.

Anyways, Mommy K had a long talk with the kids and decided since our daughter didn't obey and got out of the car without permission and didn't pay attention that they would not get to go to that park today.  Well, I had read in Adopting the Hurt Child that parents should never cancel family activities because of bad behaviors because this inhibits attachment.  So, Mommy K decided after talking to them that they both understood the lesson and so she took them to another park.  They still did not receive the reward they wanted, thereby holding them accountable for their actions- going to that specific area to ride their bikes- but they still had a fun family activity this afternoon that promoted attachment.

Yeah for Mommy K! :)

God is good.  Praying for the East coast today after the earthquake that hit this afternoon.
